McKenzie Method

Also known as "Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy," the McKenzie Method is a safe, non- invasive, highly reliable and cost effective way of accurately diagnosing, and often, alleviating a number of painful conditions, including:

  • Disc Herniations
  • Neck Pain
  • Sciatica
  • Back pain
  • Chronic Migraines
  • Carpal Tunnel
  • Chronic Headaches
  • Tension Headaches
  • Complications from failedspinal surgeries

McKenzie practitioners include physicians, chiropractors and physical therapists. They are able to help many patients avoid surgery by treating damaged spinal discs through manual therapy and movement. A critical part of this approach involves teaching patients to practice individualized exercises on their own so that the damaged tissue will continue to heal and the patients can regain strength and flexibility. Patients with both chronic and acute pain conditions are candidates for treatment. With the McKenzie Method, there are three components of care, or if you prefer, "Three Steps to Success":

  1. Assessment - First, a thorough patient history is taken, and the patient's physical movements are evaluated. McKenzie Method practitioners pay particularly close attention to the pattern of pain response known as "Centralization." If, upon testing, this specific type of referred or radiating pain occurs, there is a high probability of that the patient can experience symptom resolution with a limited number of treatments sessions (and the patient's own ongoing commitment to self-care). Alternatively, if no movement can be discovered to "centralize" the patient's pain, then the patient is not a suitable subject for the McKenzie treatment.
  2. Treatment - Based on the results of your assessment, your clinician will develop a series of individualized exercises for you. He or she will work with you on particular movements, whether extension or flexion, right or left lateral movement, etc., that are designed to help your body begin to heal itself.
  3. Preventive Strategy - The great advantage of the McKenzie Method is that you gain hands-on knowledge so that you can self-treat to minimize the risk of recurrence and to immediately manage symptoms if they do occur.
